The Do or Die Importance of Focus // Magic Sam

Hey folks, let's get straight to it.

If you want to play guitar you have to understand the do-or-die importance of focus. If you can't focus when you sit down to play you risk the slippery slope of distraction, judgement, and self-doubt fucking you up. Notice when your attention has wandered and bring it back over and over and over again. This is the basis of meditation. It will be your greatest weapon, the ability to choose one thought over another.

"You can't chase two rabbits at once" – Japanese proverb

Focus is built the same way as skills on the guitar — through consistent practice.  Eliminate all distractions and focus intensely on the work. Fall in love with the process, as it will translate to every other thing you do in your life. Good luck.

Magic Sam learned to play the blues from listening to records by Muddy Waters and Little Walter. He cut his teeth in Chicago, where his guitar playing earned him bookings at blues clubs on the West Side. You can see why here. Not only is the boogie on fire, he's playing on a guitar borrowed from Earl Hooker. The cherry on top is the drummer's fat wallet bouncing on the snare.

Catch you on the flip side,
